The challenge: Let's save a few trees by making your own pieces of recycled paper, from collected scrap paper and newspapers.
Examples:
How to tackle the challenge: 1) Assign a collector to collect scrap and recycled paper from different classrooms (newspapers and unprinted paper work best!).2) Have a couple of group members to tear up the collected paper into small pieces of paper.3) Crush and grind the ripped pieces of paper while adding water (using mortar and pestle or blender) until a THICK mixture is formed.4) Attach the sieve then plastic sheet onto the back of the picture frame. This creates the mold for the new paper.5) Using the picture frame mold, submerge the frame (on its side) into the tub/container filled with the mixture of paper puree and slowly lift the frame flat up - allow a slow smooth lift to retain as much of the paper puree as possible.5) Clean up the sides of the frame and carefully remove excess liquid from the new sheet of paper.6) Carefully remove the wet paper from the frame and set it down on a flat surface to dry. Voila! Home-made recycled paper!
Materials to use to create your water recycling model: Your recycled paper making system can be created using: mortar and pestle (or a blender if available), a picture frame, a sieve, a plastic sheet to act as the backing of the mold, tacks, a container/tub (big enough to fit the whole picture frame), newspaper/scrap paper, and water.
